Is It Time to Say Good-Bye?
We understand that the decision to put your pet in hospice care is not one to be taken lightly. We recommend discussing your pet’s options with your veterinarian. They can examine your pet to evaluate their quality of life and help decide what is best for your dog or cat. To determine your pet’s quality of life, your veterinarian will assess if they exhibit the following behaviors:
- No eating or drinking within 24 hours
- Experiencing symptoms of severe pain
- Cannot walk or move without help
- Constant vomiting or diarrhea
- Having accidents around the house
- Low energy or acting lethargic
Is Euthanasia Painful for Pets?
We hold your pet’s comfort and safety as our highest priority here at Clarion Animal Hospital. Prior to administering the euthanasia injection, we will sedate your pet to eliminate stress. The sedation usually takes 10-15 minutes to take effect before your pet falls into a deep, comfortable sleep.
What to Expect at a Dog or Cat Euthanasia Appointment
If it’s decided that humane euthanasia is the best option for your pet, a member of our team will review paperwork and walk you through what to expect during the euthanasia process. We often use light sedation to ensure that your pet is calm and pain free. You will be encouraged to spend time with your pet until you are ready to say goodbye. We know that this will be a difficult time and strive to accommodate you to the best of our ability. Please know that we will never seek to rush you through the process. Our goal is a calm reassuring goodbye to your pet.
